Supply teaching can be hard, and kids can be difficult. These are some ways to get them on your side and get a good reputation through the children.
- Don’t be extremely strict
This forces kids to rebel more. They prefer if you take a calmer approach. Instead of shouting, talk to the naughty child. Discuss what issue they’re making and try to help.
- Don’t force them to move
Most times a supply teacher walks into the room, the children will run to their friends. Don’t shout at them and tell them it’s wrong; trial it, and if some kids are being too noisy, explain to them the issue and they will listen.
- Have a good first impression
If you are starting out on maternity cover, or full-time supply of a specific class, the first impression is everything. If you make a bad impression, kids will choose to rebel more. To make a good impression, be nice to the kids and act like a fun teacher, at the same time as doing your job, of course.
- Make the work fun
Most kids dislike school, mainly because it’s boring. If you are equipped with a good, enjoyable lesson, it will put the children in a good mood. That doesn’t mean let them do whatever they want, just incorporate more fun activities with the work set.
- Make sure to incorporate all kids
You more often focus on the kids who put themselves out there, the chatty kids. Make sure not to forget about the quieter ones. Sometimes, they get away with not doing any work because no one notices them, make sure to check up on them as well, they probably aren’t looking for a conversation, so just keep your eye on them.
This may not relate to your teaching style, and that’s okay, but coming from a child, this is the best way to relate to the children which- from experience -kids respond well to.
